Skin Care Sunday – More Serums!

I use a lot of serums and essences – my skin responds to layering. I usually apply an essence (or wear a sheet mask), and use a vitamin c serum and a hydrating serum minimum.

image

I bought this based on really good reviews from other bloggers and vloggers and I didn’t really look as carefully at the ingredients as I usually do. When I opened it to start using it, I was smacked in the face with the smell of alcohol. It smelled and felt exactly like using Purell on my face. I didn’t notice any excessive drying so I used it all up, but this has gone on my “nope!” list.

image

I purchased this in a kit last year that cost just as much as this sized bottle alone. It was expensive. But it was my birthday, dammit, and what’s the point of adulting if you can’t splurge once in a while? This took forever to get through. Long enough that, if you really like the product, it’s a good deal. For me, it was just okay. I liked the watery texture. I almost put it in a spray bottle more than once. (I don’t know what stopped me except for guilt at not following directions.) In four months I didn’t notice any change, positive or negative, in my skin. While I don’t precisely regret this purchase, I’m still on the hunt for my holy grail essence.

Ipkn New York is  K-beauty brand that hits Haute Look once in a while. I actually enjoyed this serum, which works best when mixed into other products. But I hated the packaging with the burning passion of a thousand suns. The serum was very thick and someone at Ipkn decided the best delivery system for a thick gel was a dropper in a long bottle. The dropper didn’t work for long. After a few days, I got desperate enough to open the bottle and try to shake some out. None of my beauty spoons worked. I gave up. I would totally buy this again if they changed the packaging to a pump or even a pot. But this experience made me wary of Ipkn in general.

And now for a quick montage of repurchases I’ve finished and will probably repurchase again!

Sample Saturday – All of the things!

I have been traveling!

image

We were freezing at that O's game, but it was worth it when Manny hit that grand slam! Also, crabcakes, giant wire mosquitos, and random hot air balloon launches all are what Maryland is about. Mostly.

I used a crap-ton of samples while I was gone, so this will be at least two parts.

image

I get really dry when I’m traveling. Especially in the winter and spring. I used this on dryer parts of my face and mixed it in with an eye cream that just wasn’t doing the job. I really liked it, but I’m not convinced that it did more than other less expensive oils I’ve used.

image

I tried out a packet of Josie Maran’s Pure Argan Milk a few Sample Saturdays ago, and suspected that I might like it despite the separation of the product. I was right! I used it as a hydrating serum for a couple of weeks. This larger sample allowed me to shake it up. It sunk in right away, didn’t feel heavy or sticky, and wasn’t too much under moisturizer. This may be a good one to pick up for fall and winter next year.

image

I haven’t had huge success with Fresh, but this serum wasn’t too bad. It didn’t burn or do anything weird to my skin. It seemed to work well with other serums as well. I didn’t hate it, but I wasn’t over the moon with it either. Meh?

image

Fresh is on a roll! This also wasn’t terrible. I used it as a day moisturizer. It wasn’t super hydrating, but the SPF I use is so this didn’t have to pull all the weight. I don’t think I’d purchase, but it wasn’t bad!

image

The Tartiest Lash Paint mascara was very good. I got some good length and a little volume, but I didn’t like it quite as much as my favorite Lights, Camera, Lashes. The tube of the sample didn’t unscrew, but snapped together. I didn’t keep it open for very long because I was afraid that this construction would make it easier for air and bacteria to get in there.

image

I really enjoyed the Agave Lip Mask. I used it at night and woke up with most of it still on. The red one had enough of a tint to it that I felt really silly wearing it to bed, so I didn’t finish that one.

I think we’ll stop here for now and pick this up next Saturday!

Mask Monday – Berries, Lace, and Me as a Bear

I’ve done a little masking!

image

This is a cream one. It smelled of strawberry. There was a slight cooling, tingling sensation. I rinsed it off in the shower, and afterward, my skin felt very soft. Not awesome, not terrible.

image

I just want to take a minute to appreciate that Hey! Pinko Girl has the most adorable packaging ever. I feel like I need to say something positive about it because I’m about to…not.

I think this might work for someone who has a smaller everything than I do. It’s a relatively thick cloth mask that’s literally lacy so there are lots of open air spaces. The mask has two sets of ear loops – one that holds the mask to your face, and one that holds the neck strap on. That’s a lot of stuff behind the ears. I couldn’t wear my glasses and, even though I felt like I could have used a silicone mask cover on top to keep the essence from evaporating due to the lacy texture, there’s no way I could have fit one on with the ear loops I was already wearing. I felt like this was fairly ineffective because of the actual construction of the sheet. I have a few more to use, but won’t buy more.

image

This one was lovely! My skin likes fruit essences and acids. The sheet itself was a medium thickness and was wide enough for my large face. It smelled like berries. There was a very pleasant tingle. It wasn’t drippy and didn’t dry out my face. Win!

image

And then there’s this guy. He’s cute, don’t get me wrong! The sheet was very rigid and difficult to mold to the face. It smelled very medicinal – very much like the Montagne Jeunesse sheet masks, which I didn’t like. It performed like them too. There was some burning on the tops of my cheeks – my usual trouble spots – so I took it off early. It was, however, adorable to look at before I put it on.  Afterward, however…

Skin(and hair!)care Sunday

I finished some bath products recently!

image

I got this little shower gel from Urban Dollkiss in my Beauteque bag. It’s a little adorable and, I think, designed to be stackable because there’s a cap-sized divet in the bottom of the bottle.

It was fine. This particular one was very minty, so I had to be careful where I used it.

image

Yes, I’ve talked about this guy before. I found it last year, fell in lust with the scent, and bought lots of backups. I have two left after this one. If you want to smell cake in the shower (which, honestly, I always want to smell cake), this is one to go for if you can find it on sale.

image

My old standby. I finished this one and three-isn bottles of the conditioner. I keep thinking I’ll find something I’ll like better but I never do.

image

Not even Living Proof. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the way this made my hair feel. Hydrated, silky, full of my natural wave. But the scent is a bit off-putting for me. And the price. My hair is almost thigh-length now. I used this bottle and a shampoo mini about 4 times and it was gone. I may treat myself again, but this is not something I’ll buy on the regular.

Skin Care Sunday – Indie & Organic

image

I use cuticle oil like it’s going out of style, but it takes so long to get through a container! I have them stashed everywhere! I kept this pen in my purse and used it throughout the day. Raspberry Vanilla is one of my all-time favorite scents.

image

I was a little afraid of this serum at first! I had tried out the Avalon Organics vitamin c toner last year and it burned the ever-loving crap out of my skin. Despite having used other vitamin c products since then, I was still a little sensitive to this. But it was tolerable! By the time I was through with the bottle, I was only feeling a slight pleasant flush. I loved the orange scent.

image

I have cancelled my Rainbow Honey subscription, but I have quite a bit of backstock to go through! Their lotions are very moisturizing and sink in fast. I definitely think they’re worth the spend! Especially for someone looking for ‘cone-free creams. Some of their fragrances aren’t for me, though. I never really took to this one. It didn’t give me a headache or anything, but it had a fresh, yet old lady-like quality to it, that I couldn’t quite pin down.

Sample Saturday – Some Daytime Serums

I layer a lot of skincare at night. At minimum, I have a vitamin c serum, a hydrating serum and moisturizer. Most of the time I have a third or fourth serum in there depending on what they do, sometimes an essence and/or a sleeping mask. Since I don’t use silicones or items with a high alcohol content at night, most of my serum samples get used during my less complex morning skin care routine.

image

I really liked the Truth Serum. This sample took me a few months to go through. It smelled like oranges, wasn’t sticky, sunk in well, tingled just a little to tell me it was working, and sat well under moisturizer and makeup.

image

This one smelled straight-up like alcohol, which shouldn’t have been a surprise because it’s second on the list of inactive ingredients. It didn’t negatively affect my skin, but I moisturize very well. I won’t be trying this one again and wouldn’t recommend it.

image

This one was just okay. It had a strong fragrance. Lots of high-end brands do, unfortunately. It had a slimy texture. I didn’t see a change in my skin, good or bad. So it didn’t hurt! But I’m not sure it helped.

Mask Monday – The Body Shop and Lots of Sheet Masks

After the craziness of the past few months, I feel like I’m finally back to my regular masking schedule and my skin is grateful for it!

image

This sheet mask was okay! It was a little small, so if you have a big head or chubby face like I do, you may not like it. The sheet was medium in thickness. It smelled of fermented honey and there was a lot of essence left over that I saved and used throughout the week. There was no sensation with this mask.

image

One of my goals for the upcoming year is to use up all my non-sheet masks. I was feeling particularly dry mid-week, so I pulled this one out. It’s a cream mask, and definitely one-use only. I had to work to get enough out for my whole face. There was a lot of tingling – not something I associate with a moisture mask. Once I rinsed it off, it didn’t feel like I had used anything at all. Not recommended – at least not for hydration! However, I love The Body Shop’s Tea Tree mask for breakouts.

image

I scared the cat with this one, folks!

I didn’t expect this one to be black, even though it says it right on the packet. Although it fit really well, I felt a little sinister with this on my face. It got worse once I put a silicone mask cover and my glasses on, which is what I typically do. I loved this one, though. Good size, adhered well, enough essence, but not too drippy, the essence absorbed right away, and my skin felt awesome. Definitely recommended.

image

We need something cute after that one, and this egg essence mask fits the bill with its packaging! This was was very cold as it sat on my face, even under the mask cover. The sheet itself was smallish and medium in thickness. Afterward, my skin felt dry, but not dry. Which makes so sense. I think it may come in handy during the summer, when I sometimes get an oily T-zone.

image

And finally, I used a My Beauty Diary Natto mask. I’m very familiar with these. The sheets from this brand are thin and very drippy, but always leave me feeling mosturized.
